Jen and I always look for new projects to add to our mix. Fridays (or every other Friday, at least) we wear fun sneakers and comfy old jeans and dig around in our supply bins for inspiration. Or we consult our inspiration wall or re-visit projects that need to be spruced up. We fire up the music – giving Pandora a run for its money, asking it to create a station with Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and 80s favorites.
Today, I worked on a mobile project that we tried with our 1st-grade after-school class. The flat, simple shapes and wire frame are reminiscent of Calder’s mobiles – on a smaller scale. He was our design influence for this project! My color-influence, truthfully, was Dwell Studio. The combination of gray, lime-yellow and seafoam blue is fresh and cheerful. The form is easy to make – with sticky-back foam sheets and florist stems (or coat hangers) and some embroidery thread.
This particular February Friday was graced by a breath of warmth and sun. We opened our patio doors wide, and I hung the mobile in the breeze. Our Gowanus, Brooklyn workspace looks out over the BQE to the south, far enough away for the traffic to be a nice hummm in the background. To the north, we catch glimpses of the Manhattan skyline, and, closer to the foreground, the huge red letters of KenTile Floors. Whether driving along the BQE, reading on the G-train, or sitting at my desk – this is the unmistakable sign that I’m home.
