To gather the few supplies for this woven belt, I headed to… the hardware store. I picked up colored duct tape in the paint section, plastic neon ribbon (in pink and orange) in the area with the “Caution” tape, and twine in the hardware aisle. I had some new keys made and, while I waited, picked up a couple of extra large key rings for the end of the belt. A piece of cardboard and a decent stapler was all I need to secure the pieces and start the weaving.
The last name “Albers” usually calls to mind “Josef,” an iconic painter and colorist. However, I am more often inspired by his wife Anni, an adventurous textile artist also from the Bauhaus. In her woven work she experimented with a wide spectrum of patterns, fibers and media.
Once I started my small piece, I imagined all of the different materials that could be recycled and woven in – plastic bags, long strips of fabric and ribbon, even newspaper or metallic streamers from party blowers. Now I just need the right outfit – something understated, I imagine.
