This summer, we are moving our June weeks of Curious Jane to the Invisible Dog Art Center. We have a small program taking shape, as many schools are not out until the end of the month. Though I had hoped to be at Poly Prep in June, our group is not quite large enough to offer transportation to their main campus, and the Invisible Dog offers a great space in a convenient and quintessential Brooklyn neighborhood. I am very excited about bringing our young creators and inventors there to make the space their own! I already envision it strewn with rugs and work-tables, hung with paper lanterns, and full of industrious young energy.
The Invisible Dog opened in October, 2009, on Bergen at Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. It began as a raw space in a vast converted factory building with a charmed history and an open-ended mission: to create a new kind of interdisciplinary arts center. And, yes, it gets its name from the original factory’s production of a classic toy – a stiff leash ending in a small harness buckled around an invisible dog. Have you ever walked one?
The first two floors of the large 3-story space houses artist studios and rotating exhibits and performances. Over the last two years, the Invisible Dog has hosted and produced hundreds of events, including visual art exhibits; dance, theater, and music performances; film screenings; literary and poetry events; and more. The studio especially welcomes programs for children and families, which is how I stumbled across it a few months ago, attending a weekend event with my daughters. When it looked like we may need a different space for our June weeks – it was the first place that popped into my mind.
We are offering these early weeks as our “Best of Curious Jane” – each day will be favorite projects from a different theme, and each week will be a different set of “CJ’s Best.” We’ve done this before and it was loads of fun! This summer, we’ll run the gamut from very small weeks to fuller programs – and each size has its advantages. With a small group, for example, we can be very flexible with the types of activities and use of the space, and we can also offer partial weeks for families who need just a touch of structure but not a full week.
The entire third-floor of Invisible Dog will be transformed by Curious Jane! Of course we would love for families to join us there for camp, but definitely put this fantastic resource on your map. I have been extremely impressed by the variety of programs and friendliness of everyone involved. Many thanks to the studio’s director, Lucien Zayan for generously hosting our young group!
