This week’s ‘Zine Scene class has been writing up a storm all week! Here are a few samples of their work. First, the girls wrote about their neighborhoods…
New York
My neighborhood looks like a city. A big beautiful home for people places and things. Dogs barking and birds chirping. Hobos begging and people buying. Stores, homes and schools surrounding us. Movies, TV, and church. BBQ, pizza, bagels, pancakes and hot dogs. Construction and recreation. Love and peace. Kids playing and grown ups talking. Everywhere I go there are sites to see and places to visit. Family and friends joining together for celebration or sorrow. People with animals are people with love. Parks, gardens or celebrations. Weird, sad, happy and scary moments. Coney Island and The Bronx Zoo. Everywhere people go excitement and fun awaits them. I love New York and you will too.

Vivianna and the Dogs
My neighborhood sounds like cars, dogs, wind, and sometimes a little girl named Vivianna. I can sometimes even hear the dogs peeing on my lawn. Did I mention that one of my neighbors has about eight dogs? And my other neighbor has one dog. But not as bad as eight!! But back to Vivianna. She is sooooooooo funny! If me and my two brothers are outside playing soccer, she comes and ruins it all! She’s not mean or anything just a little annoying. My neighborhood is quiet, crazy, and feels like sandpaper.

Then, the ladies let their silly sides loose with these “news bulletins:”
George Washington Zombie!
By: Rosie Jacques
Attention! George Washington’s zombie on the loose! Last night Luke Livingston was sleeping in his bed and Luke heard something. He tossed and he turned. He heard a scary sound that got louder and louder! Finally he woke up. He screamed! It was George Washington’s Zombie! Luke Was kidnapped. George Washington may have been our first president, but he is evil now!
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTS IN NEW YORK CITY
By Ashley Alexander
Alia
What happened: I was walking to my dance school. I was texting while walking. I walked into a pole. I said, “Excuse me,” to the pole. I looked up and walked around the first pole and continued texting. And then I walked into another pole and I broke my phone. And then I heard lots of laughing behind me and I turned and saw my dance teachers.
Maria
My cousin was sleeping over and she forgot to pack her underwear. So we went to the mall. My mom and me split up to find underwear. My cousin saw some of her friends and said hi and walked away. All of a sudden, my mom yelled, “Hey Maria, do you like this underwear?”
Sharon
My sister was walking some dogs and they saw a squirrel. They wrapped my sister in their leashes. She tripped and fell into a mud puddle.
Finally, the girls wrote a collaborative poem as a class…
My Neighborhood
Sounds like cars, dogs, birds, kids playing,
salsa, jazz, hip hop and rap.
Smells like dog poo, sweaty people, dirt and dust mixed together.
My neighborhood sounds like construction noise,
tastes like fashion, dust, the big apple, lemonade.
My neighborhood smells like nothing, like watery garbage, car gas,
it smells like fresh Italian pizza, BBQ foods, roses, apple trees.
My neighborhood looks like subways, a construction site, a huge
city, a park, a giant dog run. It feels like a donut.
My neighborhood feels bumpy, homemade, sand-papery, silky, fuzzy,
and it smells like home.
