November News & Updates

November is here, and we’re kicking it into high gear over at Curious Jane H.Q. We have our monthly Weekend Workshop coming up: this month it’s Wired 101 (a bit Robotics, a bit Electronics) on November 19 and 20.  More details and registration information can be found in the Workshop section of our site.

One big thing we’ll be working on this month is finalizing details to launch our brand-new Curious Jane Field Trip Series! This is a new project that we’re really excited about, conceived from a desire to provide opportunities for girls to connect with more of the fantastic resources in New York City. While our theme-based workshops will continue to be offered in-house, the monthly Field Trips will take place out-and-about and capitalize on the huge array of experiences that girls can be part of together in their city and in their community.

Our Field Trip series will be book-ended by our participation in the Brooklyn-based, internationally recognized Sketchbook Project, run by the Art House Co-op in Williamsburg. In December, we will host an event where girls will be invited to create collaborative sketchbooks that will become a part of the amazing collection submitted by artists and individuals from all walks. In April, we will visit the collection in Williamsburg at the kickoff of its world tour. We have lots of ideas swirling for the middle months and we’ll be sharing the details in the workshop section of our site.

The idea for our own Field Trips Series grew form our own involvement in other organizations’ events. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one organization, in particular, with which we really enjoy working. In the past, we’ve participated at the Cherry Blossom festival in the spring, and Ghouls and Gourds in the fall. This year, even though Ghouls and Gourds was snowed out (while the festival is billed as “rain or shine,” no one expected an October blizzard!) we kept our feet warm enough to stay for the impromptu dance party in the Garden’s Rotunda. We wanted a chance to show off our costumes, and we were glad we had a chance to see the musicians perform!

Another major push this month is preparing for summer 2012 registration that opens December 1. We are working with some new schools and returning to all of our old favorites; we’re re-framing our weekly offerings to ensure that girls can take their first choice classes; and we’re updating our curriculum with tons of new projects.

Winter does not slow us down! When you run camps, summer is always just around the corner.
