Sketchbooks Submitted!

Our collaborative sketchbooks are bound and ready for their official submission into the Sketchbook Project 2012!

Conceived of by the Brooklyn-based Art House Co-op, The Sketchbook Project is a call for sketchbooks from artists around the world. The project attracts thousands of entries every year; each is cataloged as part of a permanent collection after taking a tour around the globe.

Curious Jane is submitting 4 sketchbooks – made by girls! This past December, girls ages 5-11 were invited to create pages for the sketchbooks in a two-hour workshop at 61 Local in Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn). More than thirty girls joined us! They created pages in keeping with the themes of our 4 sketchbooks:
The First Ever…
In 50 Years…
In 10 Minutes…
Opposite Day

At the end of the workshop, each girl signed the cover of the sketchbooks for which she had created pages. This afternoon, we bound the pages together and packaged them to be postmarked by the submission deadline, January 31. (Phew!) The books ranged from 20 to 50 designs (we shared some of these pages in a previous post) and were bursting with imaginative drawings, color and… feathers!

On April 22, we are taking a group of girls to visit their sketchbooks – and all the sketchbooks – on view at The Brooklyn Art Library. Thousands of books will be submitted, by thousands of artists world-wide. Each sketchbook carries a unique barcode and becomes part of the Art Library’s permanent collection. Girls will be able to search for and find their books by using the library’s cataloged database.

By designing pages for the books, girls contributed to a lasting creative effort that is part of both their immediate community and a wider network of voices.

We hope you will join us for our April Field Trip, or visit them on your own!
