'Zine Workshop
Because Writing and Story Arts are two of our most popular classes, and the end-of-session anthologies and books are amazingly creative – we’ve gotten the point and added a new class! Our girls are incredibly talented, and have abundant stories, opinions and ideas to share.
This summer, we’re opening the editorial offices to our 'Zine Workshop. Girls learn the components of a (maga)zine – in both printed and digital form – and set to work on their own piece.
Girls collaborate to develop an innovative theme for their issue, and they take on all rolls in its production: layout and creative direction, photography and illustration, interviewing, writing, fact-checking and publishing.
No matter her job on the staff, each girl contributes at least two written pieces – fiction and no-fiction. The instructor helps girls improve their writing skills by identifying a specific audience, surprising resources, and novel approaches as a basis for crafting their work.
Girls learn to broaden their own ideas and support those of others, especially when responding critically. The instructor pushes them to come up with something more creative by working together than each could produce on her own.
