How-To Video: DNA Extraction

You can extract some DNA from a living thing… it’s easier than you think! Here we used
a strawberry, but you can also use an onion or grapes. You can even extract your own DNA from a bit of your saliva mixed with a salty solution like Gatorade.

Because DNA will not dissolve in alcohol, rubbing alcohol is the key to our experiment. In this collaboration video with Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, you will be able to see the strawberry DNA separate out of a mashed up mixture. It looks like a sticky white goo! Follow along to do your own DNA extraction experiment at home!
